'Tis the Season

This holiday season in my hometown has been particularly violent. I don’t know why this year is any different from all the others but it has been unusual.

But while some things are noticeably different, other things never change.

Today I personally took two separate calls from families in two separate hotels who were here from the Bush to shop for Christmas presents (because we’re the big city).

The first left a whole bunch of meat and the family’s entire stash of Christmas presents in the back of their SUV. The second had no meat but left all of their Christmas gifts in the back of their pickup under a solid canopy.

Both families woke up today and walked out to find their windows smashed and all of their stuff gone. The stolen presents is a sad holiday story but it's the stolen meat that is really going to hurt this winter.

Sometimes I think people are just no damn good.

Very sad to say, but yes, some people are just no damn good.

And the other sad thing is that it just confirms what they have always thought about "the big city." This makes me sad. We're usually better than that.

Then again, no one got shot and there's been a lot of that going on in town too these days.

Having thieves does not make a bad city, it was simply bad people doing bad things.

Adopt the family, have your whole department chip in and do something.

Or, organize something outside of work, if doing it at work would be seen as possibly not a good thing.

For the holidays, in my office, within my own department, (60 people) we adopt two needy families, (usually 5 family members) and fulfill a bunch of their wishes.

Combat an act of evil, with an act of good.

With us people being what we are, the suprising thing is not that such things happen, but that so many people respond by helping.

That's the optomistic side... On the other hand, over the weekend someone sneaked into the office building where my wife works and coated the restroom walls with shit... Of course, everybody has their own ideas when it comes to decorating for the holidays.

That sucks. I firmly believe in karma though, so one day, those thieves will get what's coming to them.

John - First, you are a poet. Second, you wouldn't believe how much we've been talking about folks who smear poop in the bathrooms. It's a strange, strange deal and more common that I originally knew.

Deb - I definitely believe that those who live by the sword, die by the sword (which is a version of karma I suppose) so I think you are right!

God that is so very sad. I can't stand hearing about things like that, it makes me ill.
When I was a kid, the town my father lived in still had the old-fashioned phone system with party lines. Everyone in town could pick up the phone and listen in to other's conversations. One year, somebody got wind that my dad was leaving the house to visit family; and broke into his house. They stole all our presents, my father's coin collection, even turkey from the fridge. It was awful. Talk about the Grinch movie coming to life. I don't think they ever caught the little fucker, but we knew who it was.

Ain't law enforcement grand? Always gotta love the upswing in crime around the holidays. At least you don't have people killing their families. That's always a bummer. Hopefully those families can reclaim what was lost, at least they are all alive and together.

Ok I have to reply! Anony-I know your suggestion was with good intent sorry we just can't adopt everyone through who gets ripped off during the holidays. We have donations going for adopt a mental health unit (22 clients) for Christmas, adopt a family thats victim of a fire, adopt a soldier, salvation army and some others going. Unfortunately- beware of scammers in that-faking losses to get people donating-so you have to be cautious. There have been so many additional hands out this year! From Katrina, Rita, military, and other groups etc. Yes,it is all about the spirit of giving-and Like many others , I try to do my best to give of myself, and with donations privately and participate with some work groups. You really have to pace yourself- try to pick whats closest to your heart for whatever reasons. I resent being asked by everyone specifically at Christmas when there are so many needs all year, that I do my share without burdening others all year long.
